- Genetic factors
- Exposure to X-rays
- History of human papillomavirus infection
- History of chronic inflammatory skin diseases
- Exposure to certain chemicals (e.g. tar, pitch paraffin oil, fuel oil)
- Exposure to arsenic
- Chronic heat or sun exposure
- Chronic inflammatory diseases of the skin
- Immunosuppression
- Skin phototypes I & II
- Prior photochemotherapy (PUVA) as medical treatment
