Benign Lesions

Nevi

Melanocytic nevi can present a huge variety of different aspects. Flat, raised or even papillomatous they can vary in color from pink to dark-brown to black and in size from few mm to several cm. Because melanoma can rise from a nevus, a periodic check of our moles is recommended.

Seborrheic keratosis

Slightly or markedly elevated benign keratinocytic lesions, seborrheic keratosis are usually characterized by a rough surface and by a variety of colors from yellowish to grey, brown and black. Their “stuck on” appearance is characteristic in most cases. In some cases, differential diagnosis of seborrheic keratosis with melanoma and other skin cancers is of crucial importance.

Angioma

Reddish flat or dome-shaped vascular structures, angiomas are benign lesions and they don’t give any reason of concern.

Hemangioma

It is a benign vascular lesion and the most common tumor of infancy. The clinical aspect may vary widely from bright red patch to blue-purple plaque or nodule. Hemangiomas are characterized by a typical behavior, that is rapid growth during the first several months of life, followed by slow spontaneous involution during the subsequent years. This is much different compared to vascular malformations that are usually present at birth and do not resolve spontaneously.

Dermatofibroma

It is most frequently observed on the lower extremities of adults subjects but it may arise in any location. The lesion presents as firm, depressed or elevated nodule or plaque, ranging in size from few millimeters up to several cm. The lesion is commonly brownish in color but sometimes may appear pink. Dermatofibroma is a benign fibrous lesion and can be misdiagnosed with cysts or melanocytic nevi.

Skin Tag

It is a very common benign skin lesion that presents as a single or multiple soft skin-colored to slightly hyperpigmented pedunculated papule or nodule predominantly located on the neck, in the axilla and groin. Usually it is asymptomatic, but it can be painful and change slightly in color after a trauma. Skin tags may resemble nevi, seborrheic keratoses and, less commonly, a neurofibroma.
