Photoaging
The natural aging process is dependent on time and genetics, and is unchangeable. Changes that are usually associated with chronologic aging (calendar years) such as dark spots , fine wrinkles , droopy skin , broken blood vessels, leathery and rough texture of skin appear much earlier due to the damage that is done to the skin from prolonged exposure, over a person's lifetime, to UV radiation.
"Photo" is derived the Greek word "phos" which means "light". "Photoaging" is therefore the term that describes the premature damage to the skin caused by intense and chronic exposure to sunlight and UV in general. Thus photoaging can be avoided with good sun protection habits.
How much of the skin aging is due to photo versus normal aging? On sun exposed skin, up to 90% of skin aging is due to the deleterious effects of the sun. This becomes clear when you compare the skin on an area rarely exposed to the sun such as the buttocks with that on the face to see the difference in tone, colour and texture.
